The One App That Can Truly Change Your Life

How many people actually stick to their new year’s resolutions? Did you? Research suggests that only about 8% of people are successful in achieving their new year resolutions. That number is almost certainly too high: No one who succeeds reports failure, but the opposite simply cannot be said. At any rate, it’s safe to say that most people fail. And fail quickly.

Incidentally, there is something to be said for failing quickly; but that’s for another time…

So why is it we can’t seem to stick to a resolution? Even the ones we care deeply about? There are different factors at play, but there’s one that almost always hold true: you’re setting unrealistic goals.

All the other obstacles are just sub categories of the main issue: lack of support, lack of intelligent planning, and life getting in the way. They all go away if you stop taking on too much. The change you’re trying to make is too big, and most likely, you’re trying to achieve it way too quickly.

Evolution, Not a Revolution

In other words, it’s a lack of patience. What you want is an evolution, not a revolution. And the only way I know to counter this need of instant gratification is to fall in love with a slow process. A process so gradual, you won’t even notice the change. The kind of life altering change you’re looking for happens without you even noticing.

Whatever your goal is, it’ll require changing some habits. Making new habits stick, and getting rid of the old ones. If you want make a serious change in your life, you better see if you can make a small one first.

Start with one habit. The tiniest habit. A change so small you’re all but guaranteed to make a success of it. And crucially, don’t be tempted to add more and more habits into the mix. Stick to one little thing, and commit to doing it.

The classic one is drinking more water. Something most people don’t do enough of, and it doesn’t require spending money, or putting on trainers and jogging in the rain! It just requires you to drink a few more glasses, or fill up that water bottle a little more often.

On the other hand, If your new year resolutions look like this: read more, eat healthier, work out every day etc. you’re likely not going to get anywhere.

Awesome Habits

The habit-app space is a strange one, in a way. Unlike email and calendar and to do list apps, there are no free apps around. There’s mostly a freemium model with heavy restrictions. This feels like an accident of history more than anything else, but here we are.

I’ve now tried every app in sight and there’s one clear winner in my book: Awesome Habits.

To be fair, they’re not radically different, but Awesome Habits gets it right on everything: layout, design, simplicity, and tracking features. There’s one paid version for all your iOS needs: Mac, iPad, iPhone, and Apple Watch. As expected, they all work beautifully together.

Awesome Habits also syncs with Apple Health so you can easily track your sleep, workouts, and steps per day. You can browse your history, track your progress, and adjust your plan accordingly. With over 2,500 icons and emojis, you’re sure to find the perfect one for your habit. It may be a small thing, but it can make a difference; an app so visually pleasing will make you come back for more.

You can also add widgets on your Mac, iPad and iPhone, and customise them every which way. It’s one of those rare occasions where I wouldn’t change a thing. If there’s one app worth paying for – this is the one.
